Abrasion Resistance Tester

abrasion tester
The top layer of the sheet used in manufacturer of decorative laminated sheets, which contains the decorative design as well as the colour, shall be sufficiently resistant to abrasion so that its base layers are not exposed in normal use. The ability of decorative laminated sheets to resist abrasion is determined by holding a circular test specimen taken from the sheet over a horizontal platform and rubbing it with abrasive paper mounted over two cylindrical rubber discs. The test specimen is rotated at a fixed speed and the rubber discs rotate along with it because of friction between them and the test specimen. This causes the surface of the test specimen to abrade. The number of rotations required to bring about a defined degree of change in colour or wearing off of the top layer gives a measure of abrasion resistance of the sheet under test.

The PROLIFIC Abrasion Tester for decorative laminated sheets consists of a horizontal platform which rotates at a fixed speed with the help of a synchro-set motor, two rubber wheels disposed symmetrically about the axis of the platform and located 20 mm in front of its centre, and a loading arrangement to press the rubber discs against the surface of the sheet under a specified load. A digital counter with memory backup is provided to record the number of revolutions of the platform.

A vacuum suction device is provided to remove the abraded dust from the surface of the test specimen.

The equipment is finished in grey hammertone stoving painting and bright chrome plating to give it a corrosion resistant finish.

Glow Wire Tester

glow wire tester
Metallic components or heating elements of electrical appliances or accessories may, under either normal or abnormal operating conditions, attain a temperature that may either cause plastic or thermoplastic parts in their vicinity to get unduly effected, and may in extreme cases even ignite them. Glow wire test produces abnormal heating conditions to simulate the action of metallic components such as glowing elements or overload resistors, on parts in their vicinity, in order to assess the fire hazard posed by them.

The PROLIFIC Glow Wire Tester is designed to check resistance to fire of insulating parts. It consists of a nichrome glow wire of 4 mm diameter formed into a horizontal loop and having a sheathed fine wire thermocouple of 0.5 mm diameter located in a drilled pocket in the glow wire. A low-voltage, high-current transformer capable of giving currents of up to 150 A at a voltage of between 4 and 5 volts is provided to heat the glow wire. The temperature of the glow wire is indicated and controlled through a digital temperature indicator cum controller.

The test specimen is held in a clamp mounted on a trolley, which can move on ball bearings. The trolley is moved by dead weights so as to apply a force of between 0.8 and 1.2 N on the test specimen at its point of contact with the glow wire. An adjustable mechanical stop prevents the trolley from moving by more than 7 mm after the contact is established between the glow wire and the test specimen. The trolley is moved back manually on completion of application time, which is indicated by an audio signal.

A three channel digital timer with push buttons displays the glow wire application time, test duration, and the time for which the test specimen remains ignited. A scale is provided to measure the height of flame produced, above the upper edge of the glow wire.

The equipment is built on a sheet metal panel housing the timer, temperature controller, transformer, and other electrical components. It is finished in grey hammertone stoving painting and bright chrome plating to give it a corrosion resistant finish.

An Automatic Model, in which the test specimen holder is fixed while a pneumatic arrangement moves the glow wire against it under the specified load and also withdraws it after a specified time, is also available. The pneumatic arrangement consists of a pneumatic cylinder, solenoid valves, and an air filter-regulator-oiler. An air compressor with ½ HP single-phase motor and pressure switch is available as optional accessory with this model.

Tracking Index Appratus

tracking index apparatus
Breakdown of any insulating material generally occurs either through its volume or over its surface, or in both ways.

Surface failures may arise from flashover, or from progressive degradation of the insulation surfaces by small, localised sparks. Such sparks are the result of breaking up of a surface film of conducting contaminant on the insulation by the heat of a leakage current passing through it.

Rapid breaks in the leakage current produce an over-voltage at the site of the discontinuity and an electric spark is caused. Repeated sparks at any one point may lead to setting up of a carbon track between points at different potentials. This process is known as tracking.

Insulating parts retaining live parts in position shall have adequate resistance to tracking if they are exposed to excessive deposition of moisture or dirt in normal use.

The PROLIFIC Tracking Index Apparatus is designed to test resistance to tracking of insulating materials other than ceramics. The apparatus consists of two brass electrodes of specified dimensions with an arrangement to place them on the surface of the test specimen exerting a specified load on it, and suitable means to apply a specified test voltage across them. A conducting liquid dropping device is provided to wet the surface between the electrodes with a solution of ammonium chloride, with drops of specified size falling at specified time intervals.

The electrode assembly and dropping device are fitted in a sheet metal chamber having an acrylic door for viewing the test set up. A micro-switch cuts off supply to the electrodes whenever the door is opened. An exhaust fan is provided to remove water vapour and other gases produced during the test.

The test chamber is placed on the side of a sheet metal control panel which houses various voltage and current controlling elements, besides switches, indicators, drop counter, etc.

The control panel has an auto-transformer (variac) to vary the voltage across the electrode, a rheostat to adjust the resistance in the circuit to limit the current to 1 ampere with the electrodes short circuited, an over-current relay for tripping the circuit when the current exceeds the specified value, and a drop counting circuit with an electronic digital counter to count the number of drops falling. It also has a voltmeter, an ammeter, and various switches and indicators. A thermal relay is provided to trip off the supply to the electrodes and to activate an audio-visual alarm as soon as the breakdown of the insulation occurs.

The apparatus is supplied with two sets of brass electrodes. Platinum electrodes can also be supplied against specific demand.

The standard model of the apparatus is designed to determine tracking index of up to 300 volts. Special models for determining tracking index of up to 600 volts or up to 1200 volts can also be offered against specific requirements.

Soft Material Thickness Gauge

soft material thickness gauge
Linear dimensions of soft materials such as foams, below 150 mm are measured by using a soft material thickness gauge having an arrangement to measure thickness with an indentor of specified area exerting a specified pressure on the test specimen whose thickness is being measured.

The PROLIFIC Soft Material Thickness Gauge for soft materials such as foams consists of a dial indicator fitted on a metallic frame and a round indentor of specified size and weight to apply a specified pressure on the test specimen.

The reading is taken after a low voltage electric contact is made between the indentor and tip of the dial indicator. An LED indicator is provided to indicate the making of the contact. The electrical contact system is operated with the help of two penlight cells. This arrangement ensures that the force exerted by the spring of the dial indicator is not transferred to the indentor, thus avoiding any error in measurement of the thickness.
